Flood alerts for Sittingbourne, Kemsley, Faversham, Seasalter and the Isle of Sheppey issued

A flood alert has been issued for stretches of the coast.

The Environment Agency (EA) is warning that low-lying land, promenades and coastal footpaths are expected to flood today.

From high tide at 4.30am, there is due to be a large surge with flooding possible from 2.30am and 6.30am.

After the high tide, no further impacts are expected.

Areas in Sittingbourne, Kemsley, Faversham, Seasalter and the Isle of Sheppey are all set to be affected.

EA incident response staff are closing floodgates and checking defences.

People should be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

The EA is also expecting groundwater flooding in east Kent to continue until the spring.

In a flood alert last week that remains in place, the agency said higher-than-average rainfall could see flooding affect low-lying land, roads, and water infrastructure in the Elham Valley, Alkham, and Petham.

Other communities in the area may also be impacted and the EA has advised people to avoid walking or driving through flood water.
