Leaks leave Sheppey roads awash with water in Minster and Eastchurch

Residents are up in arms over long running leaks which have left roads and homes awash with water for weeks.

Despite several visits, Southern Water and its contractors have failed to stop water leaking across the unmade Augustine Road in Minster and across Warden Road at Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey.

Fed-up pensioner Nigel Shotton, 77, who lives on the junction of Augustine Road and Minster Drive, complained: "This has been going on for six weeks. They've left it looking like a bomb site."

Workers have removed undergrowth and dug three holes alongside his garden wall. But water is still leaking across the road and running into a neighbour's driveway.

Mr Shotton said: "Water has flooded our front garden. I've called people left, right and centre to try to get it sorted but I seem to be banging my head against a brick wall.

"Now the nights are drawing in and the temperatures are dropping we are going to end up with sheets of ice across the road. The lawyers will be rubbing their hands with glee."

He added: "We've had all sorts of people turn up, including a leak detection company, but still nothing gets done. They keep digging in the same place. When I tell them someone else has dug there, they tell me I'm wrong.

"I might be in my 70s but I'm not senile. I know a hole when I see one."

He has kept a log of the visits since he first reported the leak on August 22. It includes holes being dug, filled in and dug up again and damage to a fire hydrant.

Neighbour Barbara Terry has also been bombarding Southern Water with complaints.

She said: "I first noticed the leak as I was leaving for work at 6.30am on August 23. Six weeks later, it is still there.

"Southern Water has been phoned nearly every day by us. They either tell us there is no water leak or say it has been mended. But it hasn't. It's still there. I don't know what else we can do."

Similar problems are facing residents at the other end of the Island. Stephen Hawkins has been complaining about another leak in Warden Road at the junction of Norman Road.

He said he was told it was going to be fixed on October 2 but last week water was still bubbling out of a hole in the road. One woman driver who gingerly drove through the giant puddle said: "We are all fed up with this. I've lost at least one tyre by hitting the hole hidden under the water."

The complaints have coincided with Southern Water beginning work on installing a two new water mains to serve Sheppey after the Island had its water supply cut during the summer following two major leaks.

A spokesman for Southern Water said: “Following investigations, we have pinpointed the location of the leak at Warden Road. We now require a road closure to repair it, and this work is currently planned for Monday, October 17.

“We are on site at Augustine Road to investigate the source of this leak. Once identified, we will plan the repair to be completed as quickly as possible.”
