Diggers at Sheerness play park after huge fire destroyed £50k of equipment

The future of a £50,000 playground castle which was destroyed in a huge blaze is still uncertain.

Diggers and workmen have been seen at the Beachfield's Sandpit in Sheerness clearing debris caused by the fire last month.

The play park equipment was set alight at about 6.20pm on December 19.

Its castle element was destroyed, with only the metal framework left behind.

One witness, Shelby Smith, told KentOnline the climbing frame would be missed.

She said: “It will be missed by many as we spent most of the summer at the sandpit with our children.”

The castle was only installed at the sandpit four years ago as a replacement for the former pirate's galleon.

A spokesman for Swale council said: "Our primary focus is making the area safe, and we have been working with our contractors to achieve this.

"The play area is a high priority and as such efforts are being made to replace the unit lost.

"This will take some time to commission and then install.

"We are liaising with Sheerness Town Council to make sure local views are heard and appreciate their offer of support.

"As soon as we have a definitive timescale we will let residents know.”
