Traders are being urged to fly the flag to mark St George’s Day.

Although England’s patron saint’s day is officially Tuesday, April 23, celebrations will be going on in Sheerness on Saturday, April 27.

The Big Fish Band will be leading a parade through the town, starting at Beachfields, by McDonalds, at 11.30am. They will march to the Clocktower where a performance of George and the Dragon will take place at 12pm.

It is hoped families and children will join in with helmets and shields.

Organiser Chris Reed, of Big Fish Arts, hopes there will be plenty of England flags in shop fronts.

She said: “I think it is a shame it isn’t celebrated as much [as other patron saints days] but I don’t think people know what to do.

“I think it is about parades, and getting dressed up and children getting involved.

“It’s a celebration of old England.”
