Southern Water has not specified how many homes are affected but said it covers Eastchurch, Warden and Leysdown.

A spokesman said: "We have completed temporary repairs on the burst pipe at Plough Road.

"We are gradually refilling our network and supplies will start to return over the next hour.

"There may be some discolouration at first but this normally disappears if you run the taps for a few minutes. We may need to temporarily switch off supplies during the night to complete a permanent fix but will do this timed to minimise inconvenience.

"We would like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for the loss of supplies today."

Earlier the water company said it would support vulnerable customers with deliveries of bottled water.
