Firefighters receive commendations after brave acts at Strode Crescent fire and Sheppey Crossing crash

Sheppey firefighters picked up awards for their actions at two separate incidents.

Ron Selfe received a certificate of commendation at a ceremony at Oakwood House, Maidstone, on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old was off-duty on July 1 when he took control before emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash on the Sheppey Crossing which claimed the lives of Deborah Roberts and her eight-year-old son Marshall.

His actions were described as “invaluable” by a paramedic.

Mr Selfe said: “I am proud to have received this commendation, although I really feel that I was just doing what I would hope anyone else would have done if faced with this tragic incident.

“I know I did the very best job I could in very distressing circumstances and my thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of those that lost their lives.”

Red watch manager Jim Ashby and firefighters Steve Uggles, Steve Smart and Paul Ross picked up certificates of congratulation.

They were recognised for rescuing 72-year-old John Lawson from the first floor of his flat in Strode Crescent, Sheerness, on April 9 while also battling a fire on the ground floor.

They were commended for their “quick and courageous” actions under “extreme pressure”.
