She said: "It's now all hands on deck as it is our intention to deliver this life-saving equipment to local care homes as a matter of urgency."

She added: "Our message to our key workers, our caregivers, is to hold on. We value what you are doing for our most vulnerable and we want you to stay safe. Please rest assured, the cavalry is coming."

Deliveries of special packs of visors, masks, aprons, gloves and alcohol spray are expected to take place tomorrow (Wednesday).

The equipment has been bought by the council as a one-off £10,000 goodwill gesture for caregivers in the community, proposed by council chairman Cllr Ken Ingleton.

Miss Hamilton added: "We have been able to source this equipment from local companies and are happy to pass on their details."

The parish council also agreed to team up with Sheerness Town Council to combine funds to get the best deal for the equipment.

The next virtual meeting of the council is Thursday (May 21) at 10am via Zoom with an update of the council's Covid-19 response.
