Crash on Cowstead Corner roundabout on Sheppey

A driver was seriously injured after a car smashed through a fence and ended up in a field on Sheppey.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the accident, near the Cowstead Corner roundabout.

Witnesses initially said they appeared to be trying to free the driver, but a tent has now been set up around the scene.

The air ambulance was also called and took a man to hospital.

The crash happened at around 7.20pm.

The Sheppey Crossing was closed in both directions as a result and traffic going on and off the Island was diverted along the old Sheppey Way and over the Kingsferry Bridge.

An ambulance was still at the scene at 9.30pm.

Part of the Brielle Way between Cowstead Corner and the new Aldi depot and Morrisons supermarket was closed.
