Broken down vehicles in thick fog on Sheppey Crossing cause police to close bridge

The Sheppey Crossing was closed twice today after two vehicles broke down in thick fog.

Police were first called at 5.10am when a BMW came to a halt just off the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway.

Due to poor visibility, officers closed the road until the vehicle could be escorted to safety.

It was reopened just before 6am and no one was reported injured.

But the crossing was then closed in the other direction at about 9am because of a stranded minibus.

A police 4x4 was sent to the scene to clear it, while traffic was diverted via the Kingsferry Bridge.

The Sheppey Crossing was the scene of a 150-vehicle crash in thick fog in September last year in which 40 people were taken to hospital.

A mother and her eight-year-old son also died following a crash on top of the bridge on July 1.
