Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt claimed £675 for repairs to a damp-affected bathroom and bedroom in his second home, according to the latest set of allowances published.

He also asked if he could claim £1,300 for roof repairs but after discussions with the Parliamentary fees office, he decided not to do so.

The claim for £675 was lodged by the MP in May but was not immediately sanctioned by the fees office, which wrote back to him to ask if the cost of the repairs could be met by his insurers.

Mr Wyatt replied saying that he had approached his insurance company but they had “put it down to wear and tear and refused it”.

Having initially withheld the payment, the fees office subsequently did agree to pay for the work under what are now known as Personal Additional Accommodation Expenditure.

The allowances details also show that in March the MP submitted a claim that included a sum of £1,300 for roof repairs. However, Mr Wyatt says that after discussions with the fees office, that was not pursued and he met all the costs himself.

The latest documents also show that in September 2008, the MP was asked to repay £373 in second homes allowance.

In other claims, the MP received on average about £1,400 a month to cover mortgage payments and claimed between £160 and £200 for cleaning and ironing. He also claimed £269 for an LCD television set.
