Dedicated shoppers and hardworking supermarket staff have helped raised almost £2,000 for charity.

As part of the national Stand up to Cancer campaign, workers at Tesco Sheerness took to a running machine and exercise bike to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

They took it in turns to do half hour slots on the machines at the store in Bridge Road on Friday and Saturday.

General assistant Martyn Heaney managed to do the equivalent of a half marathon and the 22-year-old raised £200.

Staff also dressed up in yellow and orange.

As well as raising more than £1,750 for the charity, generous customers also donated around 25 bags worth of unwanted clothing, which will be distributed to various branches of the charity’s shops.

Those who donated bags as part of the Shop and Drop side of the campaign received a voucher for £5 off a £20 spend on clothes.

The supermarket’s community champion Hazel Webb said: “It’s fantastic how much we have raised.

“It was a good, fun day – the staff enjoyed it and it’s nice to do something that gives back.

“We would like to thank the customers who donated and all the staff that participated.”
