Swimmers take part in annual Christmas swim in Minster

It might have been one of the mildest Decembers ever but that still doesn’t mean it’s not freezing cold when you take a dip in the sea.

About 30 people did just that off Minster Leas on Sunday in the Christmas swim, led by Mark Whitton and now organised for the third year running by Minster Beach Hut Association.

Among them was Ian Arnell, Swale council’s seafront officer. “It was a little bit milder this year, which helped,” he said.

“A couple stayed in for about five to 10 minutes while everyone else ran in and out. Everyone was really pleased with the turn-out.”

Hot drinks were waiting for those who braved the chill. Most swimmers were men but there were also a few women and a couple of children.

The tradition of bathers taking to the icy winter waters off Sheppey was observed annually by Rochester Swimming and Lifeguard Club for more than 50 years until 2013.
