One of the updates, posted shortly before 6pm, said that, due to the vandalism, the service had been suspended on the Sheerness line while a replacement train was sourced.

A rail replacement bus had to stand in while the services where suspended for two hours – between 4.25pm and 6.25pm.

The 6.25pm Sittingbourne to Sheerness service was the first train to run.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "We had to suspend services between Sittingbourne and Sheerness for a short time earlier today as someone threw an object at a train near Kemsley, breaking a window.

"Fortunately, no-one was injured and passengers travelled on to Sittingbourne. We have resumed services this evening.

“Anyone who sees vandalism on the railway should report it to the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016.”

The spokesman said it was not known what the object was.

He added: "It punched a fist-sized hole in the outer window, hit the PIS screen and bounced back onto the track. It didn’t break through the inner window into the train."
