Thieves steal cables from railway between Sheerness and Sittingbourne resulting in cancelled trains

Trains were disrupted throughout the day between Sheerness and Sittingbourne after thieves made off with signalling cables.

Buses replaced services until about 9.30pm after the cables were stolen at some point overnight from railway lines near Queenborough.

Southeastern tweeted about the problems throughout the day and posted a picture of the damage caused to the cables.

A statement on Southeastern's website this evening said: "A theft of signalling cables at Queenborough has resulted in disruption to journeys between Sittingbourne and Sheerness-on-Sea.

"All train services have currently been suspended between these stations."

It added: "The damage caused is extensive, however repairs and testing are continuing and we hope to resume trains from around 9.30pm."

The Sheerness line has reopened.
