Vandals have destroyed four plant displays created to brighten up a museum.

Volunteers at the Minster Gatehouse discovered the plants and flowers strewn over the ground when they arrived on Monday.

There are 15 concrete planters outside the museum, some of which were anonymously donated, and four of them were targeted by yobs sometime over the weekend.

It is not the first time this has happened. Last year six of the pots were overturned and the bulbs and soil had to be replanted.

Museum volunteers spent Monday morning replanting the troughs but they are unsure if the plants and flowers will recover.

"It's very sad," said volunteer Roger Betts.

"We try and make the area look a bit nice with flowers and then this happens.

"It happened last year quite early so we thought we had got away with it this year."
