Sheppey striker Warren Mfula has had a rethink after racing to his 20-goal target for the season.
Mfula brought up the milestone by equalising in a 2-1 comeback win over Ashford at Holm Park on Monday.
It completed a successful Christmas and New Year period for the forward, having struck twice in a 4-1 success at Swale rivals Sittingbourne on Tuesday last week.
“It’s good to get goals and it’s even better when the team are winning,” said Mfula.
“The goals are the icing on the cake and hopefully I can keep scoring in 2023.
“I’m on 20 in all competitions, which is really good.
“Every season I set a target of 20, knowing I can get more, and I’ve reached that already.
“Maybe I’ll go for 35 now - that’s my new target.
“If I can do that, it would be great if we find ourselves in a play-off spot at the end of the season.
“We’ll see. We’re taking it game by game.”
Sheppey sit eighth in Isthmian South East after back-to-back wins - their highest position this season.
Their success at Sittingbourne was the perfect response to successive defeats, with Lekan Majoyegbe and Jake Embery also on target after Brickies goalkeeper Matt Cafer was controversially sent off at 0-0.
The Ites backed up victory over their neighbours by coming from a goal down to beat Ashford, with Connor Wilkins scoring an 80th-minute winner.
“We’ve had two good wins against two good teams,” said Mfula, who’s set to start when Sheppey visit Chichester on Saturday (3pm).
“I know Sittingbourne are down the bottom but they’re a very good side and Ashford are right up there.
“We’re in a good position but that’s this league.
“You can win two games and be up the table or lose two and you find yourselves at the bottom.
“The Sittingbourne game was really good. Every time we attacked, we looked like scoring.
“It was unfortunate what happened with their keeper but, as a Sheppey player, it was 100% a red card.
“Both sets of fans were fantastic and we owed it to our fans after losing the home game in August.
“To go and beat your arch-rivals 4-1 is something they can talk about for years.”
Sheppey are much-changed from the side who won the quadruple in Southern Counties East last season.
Boss Jack Midson, who succeeded Ernie Batten in the summer, has put his own stamp on things as players have left.
And Mfula has been impressed by the new-look Ites.
He said: “The boys who have come in have been brilliant.
“There’s good energy around the place and loads of banter and laughter in the changing room.
“So many boys left from last year but there’s a good vibe with the new players and it’s an enjoyable changing room again.
“I wish that team we had last year could have stayed together but things change and people have own their own personal goals and choices to make.
“You have to do what’s right for you and what makes you happy.
“I wish we’d stayed together but it wasn’t to be and you have to accept people’s decisions.
“The boys we’ve brought in are working hard, they’re doing well in training, they care and they want to do well for Sheppey.”
