A benefit cheat who claimed more than £11,000 she was not entitled to in a year and a half has appeared in court.

Shirley Roache, 27, of Hawkins Close, Sittingbourne, was given a one-year community service order and a one-year supervision order by Maidstone Crown Court after admitting falsely claiming £11,196.92.

The court heard how Roache failed to notify Swale council of a change of circumstances that she knew would affect her benefits. She was living with her partner as husband and wife.

Between October 30, 2006, to April 7, 2008, Roache claimed £6,008.81 housing benefit, £1,218.86 council tax benefit and £3,969.25 income support.

The fraud was discovered on September 10, 2008, after officers from Swale council and the Department for Work and Pensions launched an investigation and made inquiries with employers, credit companies, neighbours and relatives.

Swale council is seeking to recover the amount owed and Roache has entered into an agreement to pay back the money.

To report benefit fraud, contact the council’s fraud hotline, in confidence, on 01795 417714; visit www.swale.gov.uk or write to Swale council, Swale House, East Street, Sittingbourne, ME10 3HT.
