Sewage is no longer flowing down a Sittingbourne street.

Chalkwell Road was flooded with human waste yesterday (Thursday)after three manhole covers burst in the space of 24 hours.

The first manhole cover at the junction with Borden Lane burst at about 10am on Wednesday. The second which is near a row of terraced houses on the London Road - opposite The King's Head pub - burst that afternoon and the third at the junction of Chalkwell Road burst yesterday morning.

Michael Ryan contacted the Sittingbourne Messenger about the incident.

The 70-year-old, of Clive Road, Sittingbourne, came across the burst manhole covers while walking to the town centre.

Dave Simler, landlord of The King's Head, was worried it would cost him thousands of pounds if the sewage entered his cellar.

Southern Water sent an inspector to the site after the Sittingbourne Messenger alerted them to the incident.

The problem was said to be caused by a blocked sewer.

A spokesman for Southern Water said: "We've cleared the sewer with a jet spray and it is now flowing as it should. The broken manholes have been made safe, as agreed with the police and highways authority, and we'll be returning as soon as we can to replace them."
