Swale councillor captures Boris scrum on video

A Kent councillor went into paparazzi mode when he saw former Home Secretary Boris Johnson arriving at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.

Cllr Mike Whiting, who represents Teynham and Lynsted on Swale council and is also in charge of transport at Kent County Council, was a former newspaper photographer for the Kent Messenger Group before he entered politics.

As Boris entered the ICC Arena he was immediately surrounded by a media throng of photographers and TV crews fighting to get shots of the controversial Brexit supporter.

Mr Whiting, who lives in Bobbing near Sittingbourne, said: "I was making my way to another meeting when I saw the crowd coming towards me.

"I couldn't get out of the way so I automatically started filming. I've been in a few media scrums in my life but I've never witnessed anything quite as intense as this storm. It was in a very narrow corridor."

Mr Whiting is a regular delegate at Conservative Party Conferences and is currently working in the office of Sittingbourne and Sheppey Conservative MP Gordon Henderson.

Cllr Whiting said: "This year's conference was actually a good one and better attended than I had expected. It was a bit thin on big announcements because most people were concentrating on Brexit. But there was a very positive atmosphere and Jeremy Hunt did well in his speech."
