Campaign gathers pace

A campaign to get a path installed along the town’s Highsted Road is gathering pace.

A Facebook group now has more than 80 likes while a petition has received 107 signatures.

It was started last month by teenager Laurence Marshall after he had a few "close calls" while walking to and from Borden Grammar School.

There is pavement for a long stretch of the road, but pedestrians heading towards Rodmersham are forced to walk on the road past the junction of Farm Crescent.

The 17-year-old, who lives in Snowdrop Walk, Sittingbourne, says he is worried it will take someone to die before action is taken by Kent Highways.

He said: "I’m pleased with the response I’ve had.

"It is so dangerous along that part of the road, I want the authorities to take notice."

County councillor Mike Whiting says he has been calling for a path in the area for the past couple of years and that it looks like it is close to becoming a reality.

He said: "I have spoken with many of the residents who own bits of the grass bank along there and they seem keen to help to find a solution and make the road safe.

"Kent Highways’ officers confirmed to me last month (March) that it is possible to build the footpath, once we have the ownership issues sorted.

"They are due to meet with residents in the near future. All in all an encouraging situation."
