Action taken over rat-infested and overgrown garden in Prentis Close, Sittingbourne

An overgrown, rat-infested garden has been cleared by council contractors after warnings were ignored by the property’s owner.

Neighbours in Prentis Close, Sittingbourne, pleaded for action to be taken after their requests to the householder fell on deaf ears.

A spokesman for Swale council said: “Neighbours came to us for help after numerous attempts to try to engage with the property owner were unsuccessful.

“We issued a Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 Notice in May, which gave the owner 28 days to clear the garden. Usually, this gets people to clear the mess, but unfortunately in this case it was ignored.”

He added: “We issued a Notice of Intent in June, which gives the owner a final chance to carry out the work required, or we would employ a contractor to carry out the work, and send them the bill.

“This was also ignored, so we cleared the garden, much to the relief of the neighbours.

“We don’t usually need to go this far, but if we have to, we will.”

Attempts were this week made by the Sittingbourne News to speak to the property owner but were unsuccessful.

The council said once a pest problem is reported, officers will visit the property to check for potential harbourage and evidence of rats.

If found, they will attempt to engage with the owner or occupier but, if unsuccessful, they can take steps to remove the infestation and then recover any expenses from them.

This could include putting a charge on their property.

To report a pest problem, call 01795 417850 or visit swale.gov.uk/pest-control.
