Dashcam footage captures multi-car smash at Stockbury Roundabout, near Sittingbourne

The shocking moment a "careless" tow truck driver ploughed into a van at a busy roundabout and causing a woman's car to be damaged, has been released as part of a wider campaign.

The dashcam footage shows the driver of a white tow truck causing a multi-car collision after failing to stop at traffic lights at Stockbury Roundabout, near Sittingbourne.

The loaded tow truck smashes into the back of a Citroën van, leading to a domino effect that was powerful enough to push a third vehicle - a car - across the carriageway.

Alison Fowler, the driver of the car, said: “This incident left me in total disbelief, the lights had just turned green and as I was just moving my car was slammed into by the van behind.

"I lost my car and could have been seriously injured all because the truck driver further behind didn’t pay enough care or attention to what was going on around them, it was so scary and stressful.”

Police were called to the crash in April, which caused major damage to both the front and back of the van as well as Alison's car, and the footage from her Nextbase dash cam was used as evidence.

Dashcams are small cameras that are placed on the dashboard and/or back window of a vehicle and allow for footage of journeys to be recorded.

Nextbase, one of the UK’s leading dash cam brands, has released the footage this week as part of Road Safety Week to remind drivers of the importance of being alert on the road.

Bryn Brooker, the firm's head of road safety, said: “This incident could have ended terribly for all parties involved.

"At the very least, this incident shows a concerning lack of awareness on the part of the driver of the tow truck, and that can lead to catastrophic consequences, especially on an unpredictable main road."

He added: "This incident further proves the need for education on road safety and an expanded role for dash cams on UK roads.

"This footage was vital evidence that was then passed on to the police and used as evidence."
