The woman called 101 and RSPCA animal rescue officer Emily Hoad collected the rabbit.

She said: “This was a really upsetting find. We’re not sure how long he’d been left or if he was dead before being left”

“There was blood on the rabbit but otherwise no obvious injuries. It’s quite a strange discovery.”

The RSPCA says it is investigating the “grim discovery” after being passed on the job by police.

Anyone who has information about the rabbit is urged to contact the RSPCA’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

The charity advises that people do their research before taking rabbits on as pets.

They have a long life span, typically of between eight to 12 years, and have complex needs.
