Sittingbourne town centre regeneration work

As works continue on a major town centre regeneration project, the public are being invited to get involved.

Swale Council is inviting residents to name a new public square which will be created by the Spirit of Sittingbourne project, which will see a new retail park, multi-storey car park and leisure complex built in the town centre.

The new square will link the leisure complex, which will include an eight-screen cinema and six new restaurants, to the train station.

It was formerly referred to as Spring Square in a planning application for the new restaurants, but this name may now not be the final choice.

Cllr Mike Cosgrove, cabinet member for regeneration at the council, said: “We had a great response to the vote to name the new Princes Street Retail Park, which showed people are excited about the regeneration.

"This project came from the wish of local residents to see their town centre improved, and we want to make sure they are involved as much as possible.

“I’m sure we’ll get a few suggestions along the lines of ‘Squarey McSquareface’, but we’ll hopefully also get some creative and interesting ideas for people to vote on.”

Ideas for names should be sent to spirit@swale.gov.uk, or submitted via Facebook and Twitter, by 5pm on Friday, May 18.

A shortlist will then be put together for people to vote on, which will be announced at the full council meeting on Wednesday, June 13.

During the last few weeks, the first phase of works for the Spirit of Sittingbourne regeneration has begun, with a temporary entrance in use at The Forum car park.

This entrance will be in place while works are carried out to improve drainage and to resurface the area.

Kevin McKeever, from Spirit of Sittingbourne, confirmed works are on track and a reconfigured car park will reopen on Monday, July 16.
