A frantic mother dialled 999 when she locked her keys in the car with her six-month-old son still inside.

Firefighters from Sittingbourne were called to the address in Northwood Drive, Sittingbourne, at 10.30am on Tuesday where they found the young mum standing by her Vauxhall Vectra keeping a watchful eye on her youngster who was strapped in his car seat inside the vehicle.

Crew manager Neil Ryder said: "The lady had put her son in the car and as she got out the keys fell out of her coat pocket and fell between the car seat and the door as she closed the door.

"She couldn't get in the house because her house key was on it. Luckily she had her mobile phone on her so she was able to make contact with the emergency services.

"When we arrived she was peering through the window and trying to keep her little boy amused. He was quite happy anyway as he'd just been fed.

"The baby was in the rear of the car on the passenger side.

"We looked at different ways of trying to get in to the vehicle but in the end we had to shatter the rear driver's side window. We put tape over the glass so it stayed in one piece though."

Mother and baby were reunited 20 minutes after the crew arrived.
