It will end months of frustration for residents who have complained of long waiting lists for appointments, problems with the centre’s telephone lines and a high number of locum doctors.

Dr Poplett, 48, said: “I’m aware that the recent history at the practice has been rather turbulent.

“I’m hopeful that my experience and patient-centred approach will provide the stability and leadership that this developing area deserves.

“With time, I’m hopeful this could develop into a flagship practice in the Swale area.”

Chatham-born Dr Poplett grew up in Sittingbourne, attending Westlands and Borden Grammar schools. In 1990 he graduated from King’s College, London.

Since 2009 he has been a partner in general practice in Aylesford, and for the past 15 years at Charing.
