Southeastern investigates after woman falls at Teynham station

Southeastern is investigating after an elderly lady was trapped between a train and the platform at Teynham station.

Mary Humphfreys fell down when a door closed unexpectedly.

The grandmother-of-five got on the 5.09pm train to Victoria last Friday, planning to see the performance of the Nutcracker ballet in Rainham.

She said: “I was getting into the last carriage and had my foot and about a quarter of my body in the door when it shut.

“I fell down between the train and platform and the conductor heard me shouting, ‘Help me!’, and he and another woman from the train helped me up.

“I could have broken my hip and my leg has all these cuts on it.”

Mrs Humphfreys got on the train and continued her journey.

In the morning, she realised she was suffering with shock and had a friend drive her to Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital for an x-ray.

Since Friday, the bruises on her stomach have begun to show and she has been suffering with pain when walking due to a twisted ankle.

The retired midwife said: “There is a problem with not always having conductors on trains, thankfully there was one on my train, but he was up the other end.

“There is also a great gap between the train and the platform at Teynham, which really is big.

“At the moment I am really scared, but because of my age, I have to use the trains.”

The 73-year-old, who lives in Honeyball Walk, Teynham, added: “I definitely could have been crushed, I didn’t hear the beeps you get when the doors close, but maybe I wasn’t on the carriage enough to hear them.

“I was halfway on the train and the conductor after did say something along the lines of ‘we’ve been having issues with that door’. He was really sweet though.”

A Southeastern spokesman said: “We can confirm a passenger fell while stepping onto a train.

“The conductor and passengers helped her up and, although she was a little shaken, she did not need any further assistance.

“As with all incidents that involve potential safety issues, an investigation is now being carried out.”
