Heart-throb's town visit

by Hayley Robinson

Heart-throb Martin Kemp was in town on Friday (October 21) to promote his new movie.

The former EastEnders' star was joined by about 70 people at the Avenue Theatre, in Central Avenue, Sittingbourne, for the screening of Stalker, which he directed.

The story is based on the 1976 horror The House on Straw Hill, which is also known as Expose.

At the end of the film the audience spent half-an-hour quizzing him about the psychological thriller starring Anna Brecon and Jane March.

Questions asked included which side of the camera he prefers to be on, where the film was set and how he managed to produce it on a budget of just £150,000. He was also asked about his time as bassist for the 80s group Spandau Ballet. One woman, who was wearing a Duran Duran T-shirt, also asked about the supposed rivalry between the two groups (for the record apparently there wasn’t any).

The evening ended with Martin posing for pictures and signing items for fans in the bar area.

Garth Spann, chairman of the Avenue Theatre, said: "There was some people from the town, a few from Whitstable and even one lady from Germany. She apparently follows him everywhere, he knew her when he came out, she was sitting at the front of the stage.

"It went really well, it was very good.

"The theatre can hold 88 people so it was a good attendance for one of our films.

"I mentioned that if he had any future projects to get in touch so he could return to the town."
