Brothers Steve and Andy Waller, of Bobbing, to cycle 100 miles from Tedworth House Recovery Centre in Wiltshire, to London’s Pall Mall

A midlife crisis has resulted in two brothers taking part in a 100-mile bike ride. Steve and Andy Waller will journey from Wiltshire to London in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.

It will start on Sunday, June 8, and will involve up to 2,000 cyclists converging on the capital from different starting points across the country.

Steve, 42, who with his brother runs Bobbing-based building, glazing and development firm Waller Associates, blames his younger sibling’s upcoming birthday milestone for their involvement in the two-wheeled trip.

He said: “Andy is 40 this year and just about to embark on his midlife crisis. Like a fool, I agreed to support him through this journey expecting, naively, that it would involve fast cars and alcohol. But it seems to entail ridiculous feats of endurance.”

The pair will set off from the Help for Heroes-run Tedworth House Recovery Centre in Wiltshire, which supports wounded and sick servicemen and women. Their final destination will be London’s Pall Mall.

About 10 miles from the finish line they will stop at an arranged meeting point along with cyclists who started out from other parts of the country. Red, white and blue T-shirts will then be handed out to riders, as well as yellow ones for Armed Forces entrants.

The journey to the capital will continue and end with cyclists travelling in colour-coded formation. Steve claims his training regime has mainly involved pumping up his tyres, but said he managed 20 miles on the bike at the weekend.

The brothers have already collected £1,000 in sponsorship, but the sky’s the limit as far as their final target is concerned.

As if their challenge was not hard enough, the pair will need to be saddled up and ready to ride at 2am on the day itself.

Steve said: “The only thing keeping me sane is the fact that we are going to be raising money for a great cause.

“I’m no soldier, but I’m glad that there are people out there who are prepared to put their lives on the line to protect us.”
