Artists paints huge mural at Swale Halt railway station next to the Kingsferry Bridge on Sheppey

It's been called amazing, awesome and beautiful.

A new mural on Swale Halt railway station's platform next to the Kingsferry Bridge – on the rail line between Sittingbourne and Sheppey – has been turning heads since it was completed.

Social media immediately voted artist Graham Upton's design a big hit and has called for similar makeovers at other stations.

Dawn Cockburn of the Harmony Therapy Trust said: "Everyone who comes to the Island by train can't help but be uplifted.

"When I come back to Sheppey the trains are now clean and usually packed. So many people will see it."

Swale and Kent councillor Cameron Beart said: "We are trying to brighten up the whole Sittingbourne to Sheerness line with both art and planting.

"There are murals planned for other stations but this one in particular is quite fitting.

"It is one of the least used stations in the country but this mural promotes the natural landscape surrounding it."

Last year, he allocated part of his council grant to Kent Community Rail Partnership to brighten up the station.

He said: "It was the first time I have been granted funds to spend on a project off the Island but, as the gateway to Sheppey by rail, I am pleased it will give visitors a warm welcome."

Award-winning Kent artist Graham was helped by students of Sheppey College who came up with some of the design ideas.

Graham, who went to the former Kent Institute of Art and Design, has painted murals at Maidstone bus station featuring artist and Morph creator Tony Hart, stunning angel wings for selfies at Lockmeadow in Maidstone and murals at Tonbridge, Edenbridge and Strood railway stations.

Queenborough Town Council has now secured funding from Swale's Sheppey Area Committee to repaint the murals at Queenborough railway station.

Kent Community Rail Partnership has also installed flower boxes at the station with help from Sheppey College pupils.

Some of the cash for Swale Halt's makeover also came from Sittingbourne county councillor John Wright.

Swale Halt is the nearest station to Elmley Nature Reserve for visitors without their own transport. It is also used by workers at Ridham Dock.
