Lorry fire closes part of A249

Police have closed part of the A249 while firefighters tackle a lorry fire near Sittingbourne.

It broke out in a lay-by near the Bobbing turn-off and has spread to at least one other vehicle - a van - parked nearby.

The road is closed Sheppey-bound between the Stockbury roundabout and the Key Street roundabout.

It happened at around 9pm and witnesses said two fire engines were at the scene.

Traffic coming off the M2 heading towards Sittingbourne and Sheppey is being diverted via Danaway.
A police spokesman said: Kent Police was called to a report that a vehicle was alight on the A249 Sheerness bound, near the Stockbury Roundabout, at 8.24pm on Tuesday.

"Officers attended the scene and provided assistance to crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the blaze.

"No injuries were reported however a lane closure was enforced to ensure public safety."
