M2 London-bound near Sittingbourne partially blocked due to accident

A person has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a crash on a motorway.

An air ambulance was spotted over the M2, near junction 5, Sittingbourne, as it headed towards the incident that partially blocked the road at 8.42am.

Cameras showed traffic had been stopped shortly after 10am to allow the aircraft to land.

Queues are reported to have formed as far back as Junction 7 for Brenley Corner, near Faversham.

Other emergency services also confirmed their attendance, including police and two fire crews.

A police spokesperson said: “One person has been airlifted to a London hospital. The road is currently closed while emergency services deal with the collision.

A spokesperson for ambulance said they had attended a “serious collision” on the M2.

“We were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex. One person has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries,” they added.

A diversion has been set up along the A251 Ashford Road down to Challock A252 Canterbury Road into Charing.

Traffic is then being redirected along the A20 and M20 towards Maidstone before exiting on the A249 Sittingbourne Road.
