A249 Sheppey-bound between Bobbing and Stockbury closed this weekend

A major route will be closed for drainage work as part of a £92 million junction upgrade.

The A249 Sheppey-bound, between Stockbury roundabout and Bobbing, will be shut on two occasions this week from tomorrow night.

It is part of a range of closures which are taking place this month, with parts of the road scheduled to be shut for 10 weekends as part of a multi-million pound project.

The route will be closed for four hours from 8pm on Wednesday to midnight on Thursday.

It will then close again from 8pm Friday until to 5am Monday.

For drivers wishing to head towards Sheppey from Stockbury, there will be a diversion in place via Maidstone Road, Chestnut Street, and Sheppey Way.

This will bring you back to the A249, where you can continue with your journey.

The coast-bound entry and exit slip roads will remain shut and are not expected to reopen until January 13.

Last week we reported how the massive junction project is taking shape.

The weekend closures are continuing until December 19, this will impact the Sheppey-bound traffic every weekend until Christmas.

A National Highways spokesman previously said: "We need to carry out a series of weekend closures to continue our drainage works.

"We know that having additional closures while the slip roads are shut is not ideal, but we need to do this work to move onto the next phase of construction and keep our project on track.

"We’ll be working 24 hours a day to allow us to carry out as much work as possible during the closures."
