Police have charged a man with raping a woman near a church in Sittingbourne High Street.

George Orwa, 32, from Agate Court in Sonora Fields, appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court today.

It follows reports of a woman being attacked between 1.30am and 2am on Sunday, August 14.

Orwa has been remanded to appear again before Maidstone Crown Court on September 19.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and would urge anyone who may have been walking in the High Street between 1am and 3am, close to the junction with Bell Road and Crown Quay Lane, to get in touch by calling 01634 884010 and quoting XY/031571/16."
