Yesterday, Southeastern said the work had been hindered by heavy rainfall over the past few days and that the line between Sittingbourne and Gillingham would remain closed for the rest of the day.

Then today, at about 6am, the train company tweeted to say services had resumed.

However, shortly before 9am, it said there had been some more movement in the embankment.

It said: "Unfortunately, there has been a little movement in the embankment at Newington.

"The line towards London is still open, but the line towards Faversham is closed.

"An engineer is on their way to examine the movement and how this will impact the running of trains."

Southeastern said buses would be in operation between Gillingham and Faversham from 10am.

Having made some repairs, Network Rail tweeted at about 11.40am to say the line had reopened.

However, trains that can run are being delayed because there is a 20mph limit in the section near the landslide.
