Mum sent home from hospital gives birth on floor

By Hayley Robinson

A mum has spoken about the moment she gave birth on her living room floor less than four hours after she was sent home from hospital because she "wasn’t in labour".

Zoe Cornelius gave birth to her fifth child Josie at her home in Bruges Court, Kemsley, just before 1am on Christmas Eve.

The 28-year-old was admitted to a ward at Medway Maritime Hospital after she arrived having contractions at about 8pm on Wednesday, December 22.

She was moved to a delivery suite later that night, but when she saw a consultant at 9.30pm the next evening, she was told she wasn’t in labour.

Zoe asked her dad Brian Roger to drive her home so she could get some rest. She arrived home at 11.30pm, but within 45 minutes her waters had broken.

Her partner Lee Peters, 34, called for an ambulance and baby Josie was born at 12.57am weighing 6lb 3oz.

Zoe said: "I ended up giving birth in the front room with three paramedics while my partner was upstairs sorting out the other children. I was upset with the hospital at the time and for a while afterwards as anything could have happened.

"Thankfully, Josie was OK and so was I and we didn’t need to go to hospital."

Miss Cornelius plans to make a formal complaint to the hospital about her treatment.

A spokesman for Medway NHS Foundation Trust said: "If Miss Cornelius would like to get in touch with the complaints department she can do so by writing in."
