A street food stall has opened in the hope of bringing life into a town centre.

Helen Castle opened Snack Shack on the High Street, Sittingbourne next to dessert parlour Kaspa’s.

The takeaway has a large menu including baguettes, burgers and chips as well as full English breakfasts and desserts.

The 49-year-old is offering hot dogs and jacket potatoes which are cooked fresh in a potato oven which she says is “unique” to the town.

Ms Castle said: “Business is slowly getting there as there is a lot of footfall coming from East Street up into the high street.

“No one else is in the town does jacket potatoes and hot dogs like I do because of the range of toppings that I offer.

“I am going to make a real go of it here but it would be great if a market could be opened down this end of town to give this part of the high street a chance to grow.”

The £3.50 hot dogs and £5 potatoes can be topped with a range of fillings from beans, tuna mayo, bacon bits and homemade curry and chilli.

Helen will be offering free tasters of her jacket potatoes this Saturday (July 22) from 12.30pm until 2pm.

There is a 10% discount for NHS and emergency services workers as well as those who are employed at the nearby Swale Borough council office. She hopes to sell her food on Just Eat in the future.

Most recently Helen owned a tanning salon but had to close the shop due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But she is now going back to her roots in street food where she started when she was 16.

The opening follows a blow for the town after Iceland supermarket closed on Saturday.

Customers are being encouraged to visit the nearest Food Warehouse in Spring Retail Park along Eurolink Way instead.
