Crash on M2 between Sittingbourne and Gillingham

Delays have cleared on the M2 after an earlier crash involving a car and a van.

The accident happened on the London-bound side between junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Maidstone and 4 for Gillingham, near the Medway services.

The road was partially blocked until just before 10am, but drivers were held up until at least 10.30am while the tailbacks cleared.

Drivers on the motorway and surrounding roads faced lengthy jams, with queues stretching as far as junction 6 for Faversham at one point.

Police, ambulance, fire crews and highways officers were called to the scene just before 8am.

Firefighters stabilised one of the vehicles to enable them to remove the roof using hydraulic cutting equipment.

A police spokesman said earlier: "Kent Police was called at 7.53am to a report of a collision between a car and a van on the M2, between junctions 5 and 4.

"No serious injuries have been reported but lane closures are in place while the vehicles involved are recovered."
