You never know what you know, that’s the saying of the newly appointed Brain of Sittingbourne.
Jason Butler has proved such a brainbox that he competes in quiz nights at the Summoner Wetherspoon’s pub in the high street on his own.
So far Jason, who claims to have taken part in more than 250 quizzes around the town since 2006, has won four out of five quizzes at the Summoner. The one he lost was by only half a point to a team of eight university students. There is no minimum or maximum number of people to a team at the Wetherspoon’s quiz, so Jason could be competing against 10 people, or more.
The 27-year-old took part in his first quiz when he was 18, and he came third from bottom. But since then, he has risen up the rankings and is happy taking on whole teams on his own.
Jason, of Miller Close, Milton, thinks his wide general knowledge came from watching quiz shows when he was growing up, and going to Borden Grammar school helped.
He says his specialist subject is everything but food and drink questions can sometimes stump him.
He said: “At the moment, with the Wetherspoon’s quiz my confidence is sky high and I think I can maintain the high standard.
“I hope there won’t be anyone to beat me, the prize money comes in handy.
“It’s a good laugh and there’s always a good crowd.”
Andy Hewson, deputy manager at the pub, said: “Jason reckons he is the best individual quiz player in the whole of Sittingbourne, and we need another team or person to come and knock him off his high horse.
“We have got a self-proclaimed quiz champion so we are setting a challenge to the people of Sittingbourne to beat him.”
