Safety group folds after 21 years

By Hayley Robinson

It's the end of an era for one safety group.

After more than 20 years, the Swale Road Safety Association is folding because of a lack of members.

The group was founded in 1989 by former councillors Bill Boggia, Brian Groves, the late Brian Austen and former road safety officer Laurie LeMasonry.

Over the years it has led campaigns, given educational talks and attended numerous events with its road safety caravan, which provided the public with information and the chance to test their eyesight and take a brake reaction test.

But as of this month the association is putting the brakes on its activities.

Outgoing chairman Mr LeMasonry, 84, of London Road, Sittingbourne, said: "The organisation is sad that it has had to cease functioning, but through the years it has proved difficult to get members. The support that it has received from organisations has been very much appreciated.

"Equipment has been donated to other road safety organisations for continued use and any funds left over will be allocated to local charities via Sittingbourne’s Whistling Postman Dale Howting."
