Sunny Bank Primary School in Murston prepares extension plans to make room for more pupils

A school has confirmed it will ask for planning permission to build another two blocks as it prepares to take on more pupils.

Sunny Bank Primary School used to be run over two sites, a main one in Sunny Bank, Murston, and a second at the nearby Church Road site.

But before Christmas all children were moved to Sunny Bank.

If all goes well, plans will be submitted to Kent County Council seeking permission for one block of eight classrooms and another to house a nursery.

Executive head teacher of The Island Learning Trust - which runs the school - Debbie Wheeler said it will allow more children to attend the school.

She said: “The school is set to expand from taking 45 children a year to 60 children a year.

“The old infant and nursery site at Church Road was in a poor condition so the new two-form entry site will be on the Sunny Bank site.

“Having all the children on one site has been lovely in order to develop a sense of unity, common sense of purpose and staff are able to see all the children.

“It also makes it easier to keep a track on teaching and learning and to see how behaviour is.

“It’s going to be crucial to improving our standards and sense of community.”

She added that parents had been supportive of the move as it means parking and picking up their children is easier than it was at the Church Road site.

The school’s new building will be built partly on grassland and partly on existing concrete.

A mobile hut will be moved to make way for the development.

Parents were invited to a consultation evening on Friday, February 7, to share their views.

Plans for the KCC-funded project are due to go in this month.
