Island and Sittingbourne schools are set to share a £1.3 million cash boost aimed at improving the education of children from poor backgrounds.

The 'pupil premium' targets youngsters from low-income families, known to be eligible for free school meals in January 2011. It aims to help them reach their potential and reduce educational inequalities.

A total of 46 primary and secondary schools will benefit from the additional funding, which totals £1,338,145.

Those set to receive the most on the Island are Richmond Primary School (£76,128), which has 156 eligible pupils and The Isle of Sheppey Academy (£203,984), which has 418 eligible pupils. Those set to receive the most funding in Sittingbourne are Regis Manor Primary School (£65,685), which has 134 eligible pupils and The Westlands School (£81,008), which has 166 eligible pupils.

Each school can decide how the money is spent.

Children's Minister Sarah Teather announced earlier this year that in addition to main school funding nationwide, a further £488 would be made available per disadvantaged child.

The news has been welcomed by MP Gordon Henderson who said: "The pupil premium will help schools give youngsters a better chance to reach their potential."
