Six teenagers arrested on suspicion of arson have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police were called to Central Avenue, Sittingbourne, just after 8pm on Wednesday, December 15, after a member of the public reported a fire behind Sittingbourne library.

Firefighters from Sittingbourne fire station put the blaze out before it spread.

Five boys and two girls were arrested in town and taken to Sittingbourne police station for questioning. Six of the teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, have been bailed until January 18. The seventh teenager, a 16-year-old girl, was released without charge.

Investigating officer PC Bobby Holloway, said: "The fire was started on a wooden table standing against the back wall of the library, next to a stock of wood and foliage.

"Luckily, thanks to the passer-by who called police, it was put out before it could take hold but it could have been a very different story."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sittingbourne Police Station on 01795 419182 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting crime number CY/019916/10.
