Delays expected in Staplehurst Road near Jenny Wren pub in Sittingbourne as 5G mast work begins

Traffic disruption is expected due to work starting on the installation of a 5G mast.

Two-way temporary lights have been put up outside the Jenny Wren in Staplehurst Road – one of the main routes in and out of Sittingbourne.

Mobile operator Three is responsible for the work, which started yesterday (Thursday) and is set to last until 11.59pm on Saturday, March 9.

Cllr James Hunt, who represents The Meads at Swale council, warned there will be disruption because there are also works on Swale Way this weekend.

Cllr Hunt said: “The lights will be a concern this weekend due to the other road works.

“The road is supposed to be a diversion route so I imagine it will cause disruption.

“Us councillors and residents were not told anything about these works as it doesn’t involve a full closure.”

Further work is due to take place in Staplehurst Road in late April to early May.

Three expects the mast will be in operation for customers in the latter half of 2024, depending on third-party suppliers.

A Three spokesperson told KentOnline: “5G rollout is vital for residents and businesses of Sittingbourne.

“We want to offer the community a reliable network experience and this new site will be critical to making that happen.”

Sonora Fields residents have welcomed the plans for the 15m tall mast.

Jeff Fox, of Amethyst Drive, told KentOnline in June that the mobile signal is “atrocious” and that he is “more than happy” for the 5G tower to be built.

Meanwhile, Ann Mackenzie, who lives in Jacinth Drive, said the mast would “improve the estate”.
