At one stage travel time was said to be around 30 minutes and Highways England confirmed the road did not become clear until after 9pm.

Meanwhile, a two-vehicle crash northbound near the Iwade turn-off blocked part of the carriageway, leading to long queues for motorists heading towards Sheppey.

It happened at around 6pm, although traffic eventually cleared at 7pm.
