National Highways announce latest A249 and M2 junction closures for Stockbury roundabout project

Motorists are being told to expect delays as a major flyover project enters its final year of work.

For the next two months, there are a number of closures on the A249 between Sittingbourne and Maidstone for the latest phase of the £100 million Stockbury roundabout revamp.

The next phase will see National Highways constructing the new A249 carriageways to the south of the roundabout.

It will include removing the existing road and building up the layers which will form the new carriageway, as well as drainage, construction of the central reservation, and safety barrier improvements.

As a result, the southbound A249 carriageway between the Stockbury roundabout and Church Hill will be shut for five weeks.

The M2 junction 5 London-bound exit slip will also be closed, with traffic diverted to Junction 4 at Gillingham.

There will also be closures on the opposite A249 carriageway at some point which will happen at weekends or overnight to minimise disruption.

Friday, February 16 to Monday, February 19 – A249 northbound weekend closure

The A249 northbound towards Sittingbourne/Sheppey will be closed between the M20 Junction 7 and the Stockbury roundabout from 8pm on Friday, February 16, to Monday, February 19 for preparation work.

A signed diversion will be in place via the M20, A229, M2 and A249. For non-motorway traffic, drivers should use the A249, A229, A2 and A249.

To maintain access to local properties, National Highways will be allowing traffic to join the Sheppey-bound carriageway via the crossovers from the A249, with the exception of Church Hill which will be fully closed. When on the northbound carriageway, traffic can travel as far as the Rumstead Lane crossover. There will be no access to the A249 northbound from the M20 Junction 7.
