An 81-year-old golfer and her playing partner are on the final leg of a marathon charity challenge.

Upchurch River Valley member Joan Murphy had the idea of playing a round of golf every day in June to raise money for Court Regis Care Home in Sittingbourne.

She was joined by Upchurch captain Tony Pereira for the 30-day fundraiser which is set to make £2,000 - double their initial target.

Pereira said: “It was purely Joan’s idea. She wanted to do something for charity and, as captain, it was my duty to join her.

“We were looking to raise £1,000 but it’s taken off so much that we’re on course for £2,000. People have been so generous. It’s quite heart-warming.

“Joan plays regularly anyway and is coping well.

“This month has been so hot and it’s been energy-sapping but she’s still going strong and wouldn't entertain the idea of using a golf buggy. I think that’s why it’s captured people’s imagination like it has.

“I’m 63 myself but if Joan can manage to play every day at 81, I’m sure I can.”

The challenge finishes at Upchurch River Valley on Monday and will be marked in style.

Pereira said: “We’re going to break open a bottle of champagne and have a little celebration. I don’t think we ever thought we wouldn't complete the month."
