Memories of Princess Diana opening Tenterden Leisure Centre in 1990

Charming snaps have emerged of Princess Diana being greeted by adoring fans in Kent.

They have been shared by Sue Ferguson, a Tenterden town councillor, who took them on the day Princess Diana arrived to open Tenterden Leisure Centre, in Recreation Ground Road, in 1990.

It was 28 years ago this week that the Princess arrived by helicopter to be met by swathes of fans, one of them was Angela Clark.

Then aged 23, Angela was the youngest shop assistant at high street ladies' clothes shop, Winters, which shut in the mid 1990s.

Angela, now 51, and a shop assistant at Webbs of Tenterden, said: "The ladies I worked with were all much older than me and they said I would be best to run down the road to see the Princess.

"I took the back route past the junior school and ran as quickly as I could.

"It was so overwhelming to see Princess Diana and I joined a long line of people and was one of those lucky enough to shake her hand. It was such an honour and I will never forget it."

Cllr Ferguson, who took the pictures, said: "I'm remember there was real excitement and people were just enthralled by Diana, who look beautiful as always. It was just such a fantastic occasion."
