Nikki Bull admits he is delighted with his latest capture - but says he can take very little credit for the deal.
The Margate manager admitted Marcel Barrington had not appeared on his radar until the striker sent him a text asking if he could train with the Blues.
The 20-year-old Guyana international had been looking for a club after leaving Tooting and Mitcham although he started his career at Stoke City before moving across the midlands to Leicester City.
Gate boss Bull explained: "I must have spoken to around 150 players during the summer but I can't claim to have known too much about Marcel, in reality he found me. I got a text asking 'Is this Nikki Bull's phone?' so I replied asking for his details.
"He came back and asked if he could come down and train with us. Since then he's been a breath of fresh air."
Barrington, who lives in Bromley, hit a hat-trick against Herne Bay during Margate's 7-1 win and then claimed both goals in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Faversham.
The Gate boss says Barrington - who has also previously played for Nuneaton Borough, Bishop's Stortford and Walton Casuals - has a real eye for a goal and he believes there are similarities between him and former Gate favourite Freddie Ladapo, now at Crystal Palace.
Bull added: "He reminds me a bit of Freddie, not necessarily in the way he plays but he's got the same sort of profile because he's dropped into the Non League game and he's not really found a home.
"He's bounced from one club to another but hopefully he's found a home now with us. He knows where the goal is and against Faversham he managed to score twice in what was really not a very good team performance."
Bull hopes to complete the signing of a goalkeeper before Saturday's home friendly with Leatherhead, after which he says his business will be done.
