Margate co-chairman designate Alistair Bayliss says the club have been amateurish in the past and need to become more professional to survive

Alistair Bayliss says Margate need a radical shake up from top to bottom if the club are to have any future.

The club's co chairman designate admits that the financial situation at Hartsdown is far worse than he had feared and that they have to become more professional in all aspects of the business to survive.

Mr Bayliss was unveiled as co chairman to work alongside owner/chairman John Webb last month and admits he was unaware just how bad things had become.

Speaking on Margate's website he claimed the club had been 'amateurish' in the way they had gone about some things explaining:"I think the situation the club finds itself in is worse than I first expected it to be. There are issues at almost every angle at the football club that we need to look at.

"The financial position that the club finds itself in is horrendous, worse than I thought even to the point where, after an hour of Tuesday's game with Hastings (Margate were losing 2-0 in their FA Cup tie before drawing 2-2) I was questioning how long the club has a future because it was that bad."

Mr Bayliss, who is managing director of Deal-based Bayliss Executive Travel, claimed Gate chairman Mr Webb had been left in an 'extraordinary predicament' after taking over from previous owner Bob Laslett.

He added: "I think every aspect of the club needs a shake up, it's not in great shape at all. I believe there are things we need to tighten up on.

"I think this club needs decent leadership. I'm going to come in with hopefully a fresh approach, they're not going to like it some people. I'm going to upset a few people but I will do what I feel is the right thing to do to make this football club survive first of all and then, hopefully we can push on and be a little more successful."

Mr Bayliss, who has brought in his own company's accounts manager to run the rule over Margate's finances, had previously gone on record as saying the club could fold in six weeks if they carried on operating as they had been.

However he now says: "I was probably being generous, I think we'll be lucky if we're here in six weeks if we carry on the way we do.

"We are that financially troubled that every pound and penny counts. I have to look at every aspect of this club to see where we're going to make improvements. We have to have a much more professional outlook and if we need to bring in new people we will."
